The cate-gory of the “teenager,” for example, was effectively brought into being in the 1950s through market research; and in contemporary marketing discourse, we can see the emergence of a whole series of newly invented categories such as “tweens,” “middle youth,” “kidults,” and “adultescents”—categories that crucially blur the distinctions between children, youth and adults.
